Skin Lesion Treatment
Mechanism, Diagnosis, Treatment and Risk Factors
What Is a Skin Lesion?
A skin lesion is any alteration of the skin’s surface or underlying layers. They can appear anywhere on the body and are classified into three categories: benign, suspicious, and malignant.
The most common types of benign lesions include:
- Nevus (moles)
- Acrochordon (skin tags)
- Sebaceous cysts
- Lipomas
- Abscesses
- Warts
- Or other forms of lesions
At the Clinique Pierre Larose, specialized care can be provided for each type of lesion listed above. Schedule a medical examination to ensure an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
Risk Factors
Anyone, regardless of age or gender, can develop a skin lesion. However, individuals with dermatological conditions, such as psoriasis, or those with more sensitive skin may be more prone to developing them.
External factors, such as the use of unsuitable skincare products or prolonged sun exposure, along with genetic predisposition, can contribute to the formation of lesions.
Additionally, long-term use of certain medications can increase skin sensitivity and promote the appearance of lesions. Consult a doctor if symptoms such as itching, pain, or inflammatory reactions occur.
How Do They Form?
Skin lesions can vary in type and appear for various reasons. Some individuals may develop a skin lesion following trauma, burns, bacterial or viral infections (such as warts), aging, oily skin, hormonal factors, age, sun exposure, or autoimmune diseases.
Sometimes, friction with certain substances or chemical agents can trigger a tissue reaction, causing symptoms such as itching or inflammation.
In other cases, lesions may be linked to underlying inflammatory conditions in the body, which can affect the skin’s overall health.
The Importance of Early Diagnosis
How Does Your Doctor Make the Diagnosis?
A thorough examination is essential to accurately diagnose the type of lesion. During your consultation appointment at our clinic in Montreal or Saint-Lambert, Dr. Larose will assess clinical signs, such as size, colour, shape, edges, texture, and other characteristics of the affected area(s) and your symptoms.
The Pierre Larose Clinic‘s medical team is an expert in this field. Lesions located in visible areas, such as the face, are given special attention to minimize the risk of aesthetic impacts.
When Should You Seek Treatment?
It is crucial to consult a doctor as soon as unusual symptoms appear, such as changes in a lesion’s colour, size, shape, or texture. A lesion causing itching, pain, bleeding, or abnormal skin reactions may also require a consultation.
The doctor will determine whether intervention is necessary for health reasons or at the patient’s request for aesthetic reasons. Surgery can sometimes be performed on the same day as the consultation for quick and effective treatment.
What Does the Procedure Involve?
The procedure, known as excision, typically involves removing tissue from the targeted area. This minor surgery is performed under local anesthesia and is painless. Once the lesion is removed, it is sent to a laboratory for pathological analysis.
Our team offers specialized care and treatments for skin lesions on all body parts, including the face.
The treatment provided at the Clinique Larose is not covered by the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ).
