Echoslerosis and Venaseal
Two Treatments to Eliminate Varicose Veins
What is Echosclerosis?
Ultrasound-guided echosclerosis involves injecting a foam-based liquid into the dilated vein to close and eliminate it.
This technique is only used in very specific cases due to its high failure and recurrence rates.
What Does the Venaseal Procedure Involve?
This treatment for eliminating varicose veins involves injecting an adhesive substance (Cyanoacrylate Adhesive), which acts like glue to close, seal, or obstruct the treated vein.
ADVANTAGE
The advantage of this technique is that it does not require tumescent anesthesia around the treated vein, unlike endovenous radiofrequency ablation.
Additionally, wearing compression stockings after the procedure is not mandatory.
DISADVANTAGE
Since the procedure introduces a permanent foreign body, the risks of complications are higher. The American Vein & Lymphatic Society (AVLS), an association of physicians and healthcare professionals dedicated to diagnosing and treating venous and lymphatic diseases, published the following complication risks related to cyanoacrylate use in December 2023:
- Hypersensitivity reaction: 6%
- Foreign body granuloma with infection or abscess: 1 to 2%
These risk factors are not present with endovenous radiofrequency treatment.
