Definition, diagnosis and types of ultrasound

Doppler Ultrasound and Other Medical Imaging Exams

Doppler ultrasound, often referred to as “Doppler Echo,” is a non-invasive medical examination that uses ultrasound to analyze blood flow inside the heart and blood vessels.

This method relies on the Doppler effect, a physical phenomenon related to sound waves. The Doppler effect measures the speed of blood flow, while ultrasound visualizes the structure of blood vessels.

Why Use Doppler Ultrasound?

We use Doppler ultrasound to examine arterial and venous systems, allowing us to diagnose various conditions:

Varicose veins, Deep vein thrombosis (phlebitis), Arterial diseases, Thrombosis and Aneurysms.

Where to Get a Doppler Ultrasound or Other Exams

The Pierre Larose Clinic offers specialized services in surgery and medical imaging. We assess the health of your blood vessels, both arterial and venous. Our two private medical clinics in Outremont and Saint-Lambert are equipped with modern radiology technology to ensure reliable and accurate results. These exams are completely safe and painless.

Main Types of Ultrasound

Venous Doppler

This test is essential for evaluating the venous system of the lower limbs. Performed while standing, it uses a probe to visualize the vessels, and the Doppler exam assesses blood flow in the veins, detecting reflux or other abnormalities. This exam is simple, quick, and does not require the injection of any substance into the veins.

Carotid Doppler

This Doppler exam evaluates blood flow in the carotid arteries, detecting carotid stenosis—a narrowing that could lead to a cerebrovascular accident (CVA), also known as a stroke.

Arterial Doppler

This test examines blood flow in the arteries of the lower limbs. It is essential for detecting peripheral arterial disease, which is caused by blockages in the arteries that carry oxygenated blood from the heart to the lower limbs.

*These three Doppler exams require no preparation before the patient arrives at the Clinique Pierre Larose.

Abdominal Ultrasound

Abdominal ultrasound provides real-time imaging of the aorta to evaluate the presence of an abdominal aortic aneurysm, a potentially serious condition. It also allows for thorough follow-up to prevent the risk of aneurysm rupture. Fasting is required for your ultrasound exam.

Ultrasound is the preferred method for screening abdominal aortic aneurysms, particularly in asymptomatic at-risk patients. It enables precise measurement of the abdominal aorta’s diameter and the detection of any dilation.

Radiofrequency and echosclerosis

During treatments like echosclerosis, which uses precise foam injections to close a dilated vein, or saphenous vein ablation by radiofrequency, ultrasound guides the physician. This allows the doctor to position the needle accurately and track the movement of the solution within the targeted vein.

Schedule a Doppler Ultrasound Appointment

At the Pierre Larose Clinic, our team uses medical imaging to capture real-time images of blood flow in your vessels and organs, whether for a Doppler ultrasound or another type of exam. Doppler ultrasound is essential for accurate diagnosis in venous and vascular medicine. This procedure is completely safe and painless.

While imaging exams at our private clinic are not covered by Quebec’s public health insurance (RAMQ), they are often reimbursed by private insurance.

Our radiology services ensure high-quality vascular care, helping you maintain good circulatory health. We provide personalized follow-up for each patient with professional service.
